Carotenoids are natural pigments that impart bright yellow, orange and red colors to the leaves and fruits of plants and some microorganisms. Epidemiologists were thrilled to observe that populations routinely consume carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables were better protected against age-related diseases. The search for this specific component that brings about these incredible benefits had narrowed down to beta-carotene – one of the most common dietary carotenoids.
However in the 1990s, synthetic single form of beta-carotene popularly used in interventional studies raised significant safety concerns among the community. Apparently, these studies showed that synthetic single form beta-carotene posed potential health threats to the study subjects, such as increased rate of cardiovascular disease and lung cancer; rather than conferring protective effects. On the contrary, the combination of two or more natural carotenoids confer synergistic health benefits not provided by single carotene.
Recent epidemiology studies have shown that high consumption of natural mixed-carotene (ie. alpha- & beta-carotene) rich food sources such as fruits and vegetables is strongly associated with attenuating the risk of age-related diseases by preserving telomere length, supporting eye health by decreasing the risk of age-related macular degenerative disease (AMD), attenuating the risk of type 2 diabetes and promoting bone health.
EVTene® is a natural mixed-carotene complex extracted and concentrated from oil palm fruits (Elaeis guineensis).
