Trade Organizations Urge FDA to Create Separate Division of Dietary Supplements

The Natural Products Association, Washington, D.C., along with the Council for Responsible Nutrition, Washington, D.C., Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Washington, D.C., and United Natural Products Alliance, Salt Lake City, UT, have called on FDA to elevate its Division of Dietary Supplement Programs (DDSP) in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition to a distinct Office.

DDSP is the science and policy division created after DSHEA to handle enforcement decisions for the $35+ billion dollar dietary supplement industry, as well as products illegally masquerading as dietary supplements. The aforementioned trade associations support FDA’s move to elevate this division to a separate office in order to prioritize the effective regulation of dietary supplements and enforce against tainted products and those with hidden ingredients.

In a joint letter to FDA, the organizations wrote that the vigorous growth of the industry and increased consumer interest in such products has led to new regulatory challenges within the marketplace. “We believe that the elevation of DDSP to an ‘Office’ would provide appropriate regulatory attention to the growing industry and increase FDA’s enforcement activities and priorities. In addition, we believe such a reorganization would enhance the effectiveness of dietary supplement regulation by allowing this new Office to better compete for resources and attention within the Agency, along with other products under CFSAN’s jurisdiction (e.g., cosmetics, medical foods). Such a move would aid in accomplishing FDA’s current and long-range goals related to dietary supplements,” the letter read.
