Synbiotic Linked to Improvements in Mild Atopic Dermatitis

Three strains, combined with a prebiotic fiber, improved itching, lesions, and other signs of eczema in 144 participants.

A synbiotic product which combined three strains by Probiotical, a FOS prebiotic, and riboflavin led to significant skin health improvements in a population of 144 people with mild atopic dermatitis and eczema. The findings were published in the journal Medicina.

While there is growing evidence supporting a connection between the gut and skin microbiomes, the role of gut health in atopic dermatitis (AD)/eczema remains up to debate.

In the study researchers administered a combination of the company’s Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BS01, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP14, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LR05, along with FOS and riboflavin, without a placebo.

The patients were assessed clinically using the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD), Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), and Three-Item Severity (TIS) scores for 12 weeks. Measures of both itching and AD-related lesions exhibited significant clinical and statistical improvement at the end of the treatment period. Itching is a major and often debilitating symptom of atopic dermatitis.

“These preliminary results suggest a potential link between the skin-gut microbiome and support the rationale for using specific probiotics and prebiotics in mild AD, even for maintenance, to reduce flares,” the authors of the study said. “This may be mediated in part by improvement in barrier function in the gut.”

“Probiotics for skin health is an up-and-coming category with tremendous potential,” said Vera Mogna, CEO of Probiotical. “We anticipate the momentum to accelerate quickly. The use of Probiotical’s probiotic strains for skin health could conceivably enable you to position your company as a category leader. The advantages of working with Probiotical include the depth of our full-spectrum expertise in strain development and manufacturing, testing, and research. We can also customize probiotics with other ingredients such as prebiotics, botanicals, and minerals, while maintaining viability and confirming stability.”
