Chile-based supplement company Nutrartis has launched Cardiosmile, a plant sterol supplement in a liquid sachet format, in the U.S. market. The water-dispersible plant sterols are formulated to serve as a convenient way to support cardiovascular health which can be added to water, foods, and beverages.

The product was the subject of a study conducted at the University of Manitoba in Canada, which linked 28 days of daily use to an average reduction in LDL cholesterol by 12% and triglycerides by 14%. The differences were achieved in a total of 47 mild-to-moderately hypercholesterolemic individuals.
 
Another study published in Nutrients linked supplementation with a reduction in waist circumference in metabolic syndrome patients, which the authors posited was linked to the corresponding changes in fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism. In 202 participants with metabolic syndrome who had similar measurements at baseline, the proportion of participants with high triglycerides was 15.65% lower in the treatment group, and the treatment group decreased their waist circumference by four centimeters, with no changes in the placebo group, at 24 weeks.  
 
Plant sterols are theorized to work by inhibiting cholesterol absorption due to the sterols’ similarities to cholesterol in chemical structure, allowing them to out-compete cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract. According to Nutrartis, the liquid format offers superior absorption advantages compared to tablet or capsule format.
