Lanfam LLC has launched Proleeva, a medical food developed to fulfill nutritional requirements for optimal function in inflammatory issues. Proleeva is designed to target chronic pain by eliminating free radicals, increasing antioxidant production, stimulating neurotransmitters in the brain, and regulating oxidative stress.
 
As defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in the Orphan Drug Act, a medical food is a food which is “formulated to be consumed or administered enterally under the supervision of a physician and which is intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or condition for which distinctive nutritional requirements, based on recognized scientific principles, are established by medical evaluation.”
 
Proleeva was created to address deficiencies in nutrients and amino acids that are commonly associated with chronic pain and inflammatory disorders including fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, diabetic neuropathy, and rheumatoid arthritism, according to the company.
 
Proleeva was created by the company’s co-founder, Fabio Lanzieri. With over 40 years of pharmaceutical industry experience, Lanzieri developed the supplement out of necessity, due to his wife, Maria, developing chronic arthritis pain as a side effect of her treatment regimen following a breast cancer diagnosis. Lanzieri researched a wide array of medical foods designed to address specific requirements of the body for a particular disease state, and developed a medical food product which combined an array of plant-based ingredients with amino acids, GABA, and 5-HTP to create a pain-targeting formulation.

According to Lanfem, patients with pain disorders may have increased nutritional demands and require certain amino acids that cannot be obtained from normal diet alone. The formulation’s anti-inflammatory effects target decreasing cytokines and enzymes involved in inflammation and the removal of pre-existing inflammatory mediators.
 
The formulation consists of choline bitartrate, curcumin, Devil’s Claw root, L-arginine, bromelain, GABA, piperine, caffeine anhydrous, panax ginseng root powder, matcha green tea leaf powder, and 5-HTP. The supplement is manufactured in the U.S. in an FDA-registered cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) certified facility.
