Gnosis, Now Acquired by Lesaffre, Announces New Business Strategy

The company’s product development specialization centers around biotransformation processes.

Gnosis by Lesaffre, an Italian biotechnology specialist that was fully acquired by Lesaffre, a French company specializing in fermentation, recently described its new business strategy following the merging between the two companies.

The company aims to utilize microorganisms and biotechnology to create a world that “moves better, digests better, ages better, feels better, and, ultimately, lives better.”

Gnosis, now a business unit of the Lesaffre group, utilizes microorganisms and biotransformation processes such as fermentation to cultivate bioactive nutritional ingredients, probiotics, and functional yeasts formulated to offer a range of benefits, in ingredient forms available to companies making dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and pharmaceutical brands.

“The term ‘biotransformation’ may be unfamiliar to some in the industry, but it refers to fermentation and other natural processing methods that involve transforming compounds within a living system,” Gnosis general manager Marc Philouze said. “It describes exactly what we do. We use living microorganisms to transform compounds into nutritional actives.”

The business unit draws on its capabilities in research, quality and regulatory compliance, and clinical validation procedures to develop solutions for general wellness, immune health, digestion and gut health, mobility and joint health, reproduction and women’s health, and mood/cognitive health, Gnosis said.

The portfolio of ingredients Gnosis by Lesaffre offers include a number of targeted applications in each category. In its wellness and immune health category, products can target immune modulation, daily nutrition, cardiovascular health, beauty, and general wellbeing. For digestive and gut health applications, products can target microbiome balance, digestive comfort, and liver health support. Mobility and joint health applications include bone health, joint health, muscle health, and sports nutrition applications. In the reproduction and women’s health category, products target vaginal care, urinary health, fertility, pregnancy, and menopause. Lastly, products in Gnosis’ mood and cognitive health portfolio target mood, cognition, and stress/anxiety.

Lessafre entered the nutraceuticals market in 2007, with the establishment of the brand Lesaffre Human Care, which quickly specialized as a fermentation expert dedicated to the human nutrition and health market. Other mergers and acquisitions the company entered into include the companies Gnosis Advanced Biotech and Omniabios, and the company has invested in Envera and Intralytix.

“We’ve brought together leaders in human health and nutrition from around the world to form the now fully integrated Gnosis by Lesaffre,” Philouze said. “We’re committed to always exploring the potential of biotransformation, which we believe is limitless. It’s truly an untapped, transformative resource that will help us develop natural, sustainable, and efficacious solutions for our partners.”

Gnosis by Lesaffre will be presenting a webinar entitled “Exploring Life to Improve Living” on Oct. 28 at noon EST, for a discussion that will be centered around microbial transformation processes, and how they can aid in product development for the benefit of consumers.
