FrieslandCampina Ingredients, a global protein and probiotic specialist, announced that its protein hydrolysate ingredient, Hyvital Whey HA 300, has received approval for use across the EU for infant and follow-on formulas.

The approval involved scientific evaluation under the EU’s latest regulations, ensuring compliance with safety and suitability standards.

Protein hydrolysates, produced through the enzymatic hydrolysis of milk proteins, provide infant formula manufacturers with an option to enhance their formulas and better meet the specific nutritional needs of infants. Although Hyvital Whey HA 300 has been on the market since 2010, changes in EU regulations in February 2022 required a new evaluation for protein hydrolysates used in standard infant nutrition.

Hyvital Whey HA 300 is now one of only a few milk hydrolysate ingredients that is included in the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/127, the final step required for its use in infant and follow-on formulas sold throughout the EU.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Hyvital Whey HA 300 has received this approval. This decision not only broadens the options available for developing formulas for infants, but also reinforces our commitment to meeting the highest industry standards,” said Jouke Veldman, marketing director of early life nutrition. “I would like to extend my gratitude to our dedicated R&D teams in ingredients, global nutrition, and scientific and regulatory affairs. Their hard work and expertise were instrumental in securing this approval and achieving this important milestone. Our customers can trust that we continue to prioritize safety, quality, and innovation.”

The inclusion of Hyvital Whey HA 300 in the regulation strengthens FrieslandCampina’s position in early-life nutrition, according to the company.
