A caffeine-free ingredient formulated for energy, marketed by OmniActive Health Technologies as EnXtra, was associated with benefits to alertness and fatigue in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, according to the company. The study and its results are anticipated to be published later this year.

A total of 62 participants were enrolled in the trial, and were administered either a placebo or 300 mg of the ingredient, which is extracted from DNA-authenticated Alpinia galanga (commonly known as Thai ginger), before crossing over at a later time.

The authors of the study found that throughout a five-hour time period, scores on cognitive tests for attention and focus were greater in the group receiving the supplement, with a difference occurring within the first 30 minutes.

“These data further demonstrate enXtra’s benefits as a safe, plant-based nootropic ingredient,” said Deshanie Rai, PhD, FACN, VP of global scientific and regulatory affairs at OmniActive. “The findings related to increased mental alertness are consistent with our previously published studies, while these new results additionally demonstrated that individuals who consumed enXtra rated themselves as feeling more energized and less fatigued at the end of the study.”

EnXtra is suited for use in energy drinks, ready-to-drink beverages, shots, bars, snacks, gummies, stick packs, and more.

“We’re really excited about enXtra’s potential at a time when consumers are hyper-focused on energy and sleep,” said Mark Eisenacher, chief marketing officer at OmniActive. “This new science strengthens enXtra’s unique position in the market as an excellent caffeine-free alternative for energy that is less disruptive to consumers’ daily routines.”
