A study from Bergstrom Nutrition, Vancouver, WA, titled “Effects of Oral Supplementation with Methylsulfonylmethane [MSM],” demonstrated that when participants took OptiMSM (the company’s exclusively-manufactured GRAS MSM) orally, their wrinkles reduced and skin texture improved. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study was published in the November 2015 issue of Natural Medicine Journal.

“With MSM being 34% sulfur by weight it has long been recognized for its potential in supporting healthy skin. However, scientific data supporting efficacy in this area has been lacking,” said Rod Benjamin, director of technical development for Bergstrom Nutrition and an author of the study. “This study helps fill the gap, providing scientific data that supports the oral efficacy of OptiMSM for reducing fine wrinkles and supporting healthy skin.”

It demonstrated that OptiMSM influenced skin on a genetic level, working in part by regulating a select number of genes responsible for inflammation, skin barrier and moisturization, as well as those genes involved in the structural integrity of the skin associated with the aging process.

“The pre-clinical stage showed OptiMSM impacted gene expression in a three-dimensional skin model,” said Mr. Benjamin. “We then followed up this pre-clinical data with a human clinical study that has shown efficacy utilizing three separate types of measurements [expert grading, state of the art instrumentation and participant self-assessment].”

When expert visual grading results were examined, the data revealed a statistically significant improvement in crow’s feet wrinkles, tone, texture, elasticity and firmness in the OptiMSM-ingesting participants. Regarding the instrumentation measurements, when Clarity Pro digital imaging was used to analyze wrinkle parameters, the mean results for the OptiMSM-ingesting participants were significantly better than the placebo-ingesting participants in seven categories of wrinkle assessment. Moreover, participants taking OptiMSM had more favorable self-assessment scores than those taking the placebo.

“Discovering the full potential of our OptiMSM, beyond our well-known joint health benefits, is very rewarding to Bergstrom Nutrition because we’re learning how to help more people fill additional needs,” said Tim Hammond, vice president of sales & marketing for Bergstrom Nutrition. “Glowing, radiant skin that looks and feels younger has long been associated with good internal health. This extra bit of research shows us all, consumers and product developers alike, that our instincts were right.”

Bergstrom Nutrition’s OptiMSM has been included in products targeted for the following categories: joint health, exercise recovery, nutricosmetic, beauty-from-within and healthy aging.
