Aker BioMarine Antarctic, Oslo, Norway, has announced the publishing of a comprehensive review summarizing the findings from 137 papers and book chapters and 31 different studies documenting the beneficial effects of krill oil and marine phospholipids. The review covers the wide range of health benefits that krill and phospholipids support, such as cardiovascular health, obesity, inflammation, brain health and liver health. Further, the authors analyze the difference between omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils and the phospholipid form of omega 3 fatty acids that krill oil is mainly comprised of, and cite a number of studies that suggest it is a more efficient tissue delivery form of these essential fatty acids as compared to the triglyceride-bound omega 3s found in most fish oils.
“The research on the nutritional importance and efficiency of marine phospholipids is still in its infancy, but the available literature in the field describes clear and interesting differences between triglyceride and phospholipid forms of omega-3 fatty acids,” explained Dr. Sebastiano Banni, co-author and one of the pioneers in krill and marine phospholipids research.
