A recent test of zinc supplements from ConsumerLab.com, White Plains, NY, revealed some don’t contain dosages that have been proven to shorten colds. Lozenges providing 13 mg to 23 mg of zinc have been shown to reduce the duration and symptoms of a cold if taken every two hours during the day. However, among four marketed zinc lozenges tested, only one provided the proven dosage. Two products contained just 5 mg of zinc and a third suggested using only one to two lozenges per day. The test also found that most general-use zinc supplements met quality standards, but one was contaminated with lead.
