Kraft Foods, Northfield, IL, has expanded its Healthy Living initiative to include “Sensible Solution,” a front-package labeling system designed to help shoppers easily identify better-for-you foods for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time. Each product that carries the Sensible Solution flag has met nutrition criteria derived from the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, as well as statements from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, National Academy of Sciences, and other public health authorities. These criteria have also benefited from the input of Kraft’s Worldwide Health & Wellness Advisory Council. Within the green flag, shoppers will find important information that will help them make beneficial decisions quickly—such as whether a product is a good source of protein or fiber, or whether a product has zero grams of trans fats—presented in a simple, at-a-glance format. Products can qualify as Sensible Solution in one of two ways, by: (1) providing beneficial nutrients such as protein, calcium or fiber/whole grain at nutritionally meaningful levels, or delivering a functional benefit, such as heart health, while staying within specific limits on calories, fat (including saturated and trans fat), sodium and sugar; or (2) meeting specifications for “reduced,” “low” or “free” in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar or sodium.
