NSF International, Ann Arbor, MI, and Neogen, Lansing, MI, are collaborating to offer comprehensive validation tests and testing services that are essential to ensure that products meet label content claims and do not contain contaminants such as unintended microbes, lead and heavy metals. Neogen recently acquired a new microbial test system (Soleris) to detect contamination. NSF/ANSI Standard 173 helps manufacturers ensure that their supplements and their ingredients are not adulterated with contaminants and are labeled accurately. NSF recently published a new edition of NSF/ANSI Standard 173 after completing a study, which verified equivalency between Neogen’s rapid Soleris microbial test protocols and traditional USP plate-counting methods when testing dietary supplements for contamination. The 2006 edition of the standard now allows rapid testing procedures by using the Soleris system in the testing of microbiological contaminants.
