ConsumerLab.com, White Plains, NY, recently tested 66 products with ingredients that may help prevent or treat a colds. The company found that only 42% of herbal supplements made with echinacea, ginseng or garlic had the right ingredients in the right doses, without lead contamination. Test results for zinc lozenges showed that only one of four products provided the dosage known to be effective in reducing the symptoms and duration of a cold. Vitamin C products fared better in testing, but their effectiveness appears more limited, according to ConsumerLab.com.
