Research: A study funded by Columbus, OH-based Abbott Laboratories was carried out to determine the effects of a beverage containing Salacia oblonga on blood sugar levels. Thirty-nine Subjects, after fasting for 12 hours, consumed four test meals consisting of 480 mL of study beverage (14 grams fat, 82 grams carbohydrate and 20 grams protein) with 0, 500, 700, or 1000 mg of Salacia oblonga extract on four separate occasions.
Results: Compared with the control, the 1,000-mg Salacia oblonga extract dose reduced the plasma glucose and serum insulin incremental areas under the curve by 23% and 29%, respectively. However, the other doses of Salacia oblonga extract did not impact glycemia or insulinemia. According to study authors, the herb seems to work similarly to oral diabetes drugs known as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, which impede the body’s absorption of carbohydrates. They concluded, however, that further studies are needed to make a firmer connection between Salacia and diabetes.
