Indication: Migraines
Source: Neurology December 28, 2004;63(12):2240-4.
Research: Researchers recruited 245 patients who, during the prior three months, suffered between two and six migraine attacks per month. Over the course of four months the study participants were randomly assigned to take two capsules daily of the 75 mg dose of butterbur extract, the 50 mg dose or placebo. The objective of the study was to pinpoint the percentage decrease in the frequency of migraine attacks.
Results: Use of the two 75 mg tablets per day of the proprietary butterbur extract, Petadolex, in migraine patients helped to reduce the occurrence of migraines by an average of 48% during the four-month trial. This compared to a reduction of only 26% in the placebo group. In this trial, efficacy was dependent on the higher dose of two 75 mg tablets—the 50 mg dose reduced the migraine headaches by 36%, which was not considered significant.
