Research: Investigators carried out a 12-week study, including a four-week stabilization period, in 67 patients with baseline LDL cholesterol ranging from 161-186 mg/dL. Patients were assigned to one of three random treatment groups. Once group received simvastatin 20 mg plus placebo; the second group received simvastatin 10 mg plus placebo and the third received simvastatin 10 mg plus psyllium (Metamucil).
Results: Following eight weeks of treatment, the researchers found that patients taking psyllium have an additional 6% reduction in LDL cholesterol compared to those taking the 10 mg drug alone.
