Folic Acid Awareness To Be Raised In Canada, U.K.
The Canadian Minister of Health, Anne McLellan, recently launched a national campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of folic acid to help prevent birth defects, particularly the importance of folic acid in preventing neural tube defects. The campaign includes advertisements in national magazines, posters and informative pamphlets directed at women of child-bearing age.
In related news, the U.K. Food Standards Agency, together with the U.K.’s four Health Departments, held an open meeting in London to discuss the benefits of folic acid to health. The aim of the meeting was to help shape and inform the agency’s and its Health Department’s eventual recommendations to the government on whether flour should be fortified with folic acid.
