Pacific Nutritional: Contract Manufacturing At Its Best
Pacific Nutritional, Vancouver, WA, was founded in 1980 with a focus on producing, manufacturing and packaging dietary supplements in tablet, capsule and powder forms. According to Michael Schaeffer, chief operating officer, “Doug Nielsen, who started Pacific Nutritional back in 1980, had previously worked at a pharmaceutical company that also made dietary supplements. The company went out of business but he decided to continue on that route because he believed there was going to be a big push on health in the future.”
Now 20 years later Pacific Nutritional focuses on manufacturing and packaging for wholesalers and distributors. The company also offers formulation assistance and packaging design assistance and partners with companies that market products in the health food industry, mass market, multilevel markets, professional markets, Internet, international markets and mail order industries to provide high quality products. “What differentiates Pacific Nutritional is the fact that we care about our customers and we focus on delivering products on time,” said Mr. Schaeffer adding, “I think that is the biggest secret to success. Our company is service oriented and we pay attention to the details to get it right the first time.”
Upcoming developments at Pacific Nutritional include implementing a stocking program of standard products such as vitamin C and B so companies can either purchase them in bulk or so the company can package them quickly. In keeping with quality standards, Mr. Schaeffer noted, “We are working to keep our facility up to FDA GMP standards and we always keep up to date with the current regulations.” He added, “We have passed FDA inspection but we just want to make sure that we maintain the high quality services to ensure product consistency.”
Mr. Schaeffer is new in his role as chief operating officer. About the new appointment Mr. Schaeffer said, “Since I came on board I am really pleased to see what is happening here. And I know that in the Pacific Northwest we are one of the top contract manufacturers. I think we can perform to the customer’s needs, which is one of the goals for us.”
For the future of the industry, Mr. Schaeffer said that the negative press must be repaired. “The industry will receive a positive article from time to time and then all of a sudden a negative article will hit and the industry will take two steps back. The negative is far outweighing the positive, which is creating a lot of skepticism out there,” he said. “I think what we need to do as an industry is really focus on trying to minimize the impact of negative press and work on having more positive press published.”
