Diverse product offerings provide beneficial ‘bugs’ in innovative formats.
According to a report by Transparency Market Research the global probiotic market is set to grow by a CAGR of 7.4% from 2014 to 2020, reaching $96 billion by 2020.
Leading this impressive growth is a rising interest in functional foods and beverages, along with a growing awareness of the benefits of probiotics, with indications for gut health, immunity and beyond.
In recent weeks a variety of new probiotic products have launched in the dietary supplement and functional food and beverage categories. Here’s a look at several new offerings consumers can turn to for probiotic support.
Ortho Molecular Products, Woodstock, IL, launched Ortho Biotic 100, a high-dose probiotic delivering 100 billion active cultures per capsule to address cases of acute gastrointestinal and immune distress.
“High-dose probiotics influence gut health and immunity in ways lower-dose probiotics can’t,” said Bushra Hassan, MBA, RD, LDN, brand manager at Ortho Molecular Products. “As GI and immune issues become more complex, we need new clinical tools that can rapidly calm the GI tract, control inflammatory signaling, and reset mucosal immunity. Ortho Biotic 100 delivers the right dose of probiotics to achieve those results.”
Each Ortho Biotic 100 capsule provides six proven probiotic strains scientifically selected for resilience, endurance and effectiveness. The new formula also features BioShield advanced encapsulation technology, ensuring live cultures are delivered intact and on-target in the gastrointestinal tract.
MELT Organic has teamed up with Ganeden, the makers of patented probiotic GanedenBC30, to launch Probiotic MELT Buttery Spread, a healthy butter alternative that assists digestive health.
Made from the “good fats” like virgin coconut, hi-oleic sunflower and flaxseed oils, the spread is blended with the highly stable probiotic GanedenBC30. Probiotic MELT supports digestive health and a healthy immune system when consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, according to the company. Probiotic MELT delivers active cultures more effectively than yogurt, the company claimed.
Just two servings, or two tablespoons, per day delivers 1 billion CFUs of probiotic GanedenBC30. Each square of Probiotic MELT is certified organic, non-GMO (Non-GMO Project Verified), kosher pareve, vegan and made with Fair for Life Fair Trade certified organic virgin coconut oil and Rainforest Alliance certified palm fruit oil. Probiotic MELT Organic is also soy-free, gluten-free and dairy-free. Each serving is a rich source of the “good fats” with an ideal balance of omega-6 to omega-3 ALAs (that are optimally metabolized with virgin coconut oil), and is high in omega-3 ALA (26% RDA).
Bob’s Red Mill, Portland, OR, has introduced a new line of plant-based Nutritional Booster Protein Powders, also boasting probiotic support. The new Nutritional Boosters, which make use of pea protein, are available in four clean varieties:
Protein and Fiber, Chai Protein Powder, Chocolate Protein Powder and Vanilla Protein Powder.
Bob Moore, founder, president and CEO of Bob’s Red Mill, explained, “We like to keep things simple, and we’re doing just that with our new Nutritional Booster Protein Powders, using just a handful of nutrient-dense, real ingredients to provide a quick and easy way to load up on protein, fiber and probiotics.”
The new Nutritional Booster Protein Powders contain 20 grams of protein per serving, along with beneficial probiotics, prebiotic fiber and heart-healthy omega-3s. Each product is vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free, and is an “excellent source” of iron. The Vanilla, Chocolate and Chai Nutritional Boosters are naturally sweetened with monk fruit extract. The unflavored, unsweetened Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster gets an additional dose of fiber from psyllium fiber powder. The entire line makes use of a potent blend of pea protein, chia seeds and chicory root fiber.
Essential Source, Phoenix, AZ, has developed TriActive Biotics Junior to provide targeted probiotic support for kids. The naturally fruit flavored drink mix provides microencapsulated probiotic strains, in addition to prebiotic Organic VitaFiber-IMO.
Prebiotics delivered to the stomach create important metabolites that balance the pH of the gut, ward off the growth of unfriendly bacteria, and provide sustenance to probiotic bacteria.
TriActive Biotics Junior has no artificial colors or flavors, is non-GMO, allergen-free, gluten-free and naturally sweetened. The Microencapsulation ingredients (probiotic coating) are 100% natural food grade vegetable (glycerine) fatty acid esters. Microencapsulation not only ensures the survival of probiotic strains through ingestion, digestion and gastric barrier, but also protects the sensitive organisms through production stages and in packaging for optimum shelf life and shelf stability.
Justin Zehrung, vice president of Essential Source stated, "Microencapsulation technology allows us to correct the current shortcomings in the children's probiotic market, just as our Capsule-in-Capsule technology has done for the adult market. Competing brands will have to go back to the drawing board, in order to better serve the consumer."
