Indication: cognitive decline (older adults)
Source:
Am J Clin Nutr, April 2007;85(4):1142-1147.
Research:
Data on fish consumption were collected from 210 participants in the Zutphen Elderly Study, who were aged 7089 years in 1990. Data related to cognitive function were also collected in 1990 and 1995. The intake of EPA and DHA (EPA+DHA) was calculated for each participant.
Results:
Fish consumers had significantly less subsequent cognitive decline than did non-consumers. A linear trend was observed for the relation between the intake of EPA+DHA and cognitive decline. An average difference of approximately 380 mg per day in EPA+DHA intake was associated with a 1.1-point difference in cognitive decline. These results suggest that moderate intake of EPA+DHA may postpone cognitive decline in elderly men. But, researchers caution, "Results from other studies are needed before definite conclusions about this association can be drawn."
