The U.S. – China Health Products Association (USCHPA), Beijing, China, has submitted a report focused on Articles 65 and 66 of China’s new Food Safety Law Draft to the country’s National People’s Congress (NPC) Legal Committee. USCHPA’s comments and suggestions were in response to the public comment period on the draft, which began in early July 2014. Articles 65 and 66 pertain to dietary supplements, or as they are termed in the report “Health Food”.
Since 2010, USCHPA has been sharing information with both the Chinese and U.S. governments with the intention of transforming China’s dietary supplement industry into a more open and transparent system. Those efforts have lead to China’s interest in adopting a notification system for certain ingredients.
USCHPA’s executive director Jeff Crowther, commented that the notification system would be a step in the right direction, however, he warned that most formula based products or ingredients that have yet to enter the market will still need to go through China Food and Drug Administration’s registration process, which takes about 2 – 3 years to navigate and costs in excess of hundred thousand U.S. dollars.
