American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) President Michael McGuffin presented an overview of U.S. pesticide regulations for supplement manufacturers at Agilent Technologies' Dietary Supplement Symposium in Salt Lake City, UT on Oct. 8.
Mr. McGuffin's presentation, "U.S. Pesticide Regulations: Relevance to (Herbal) Dietary Supplement Manufacturers," included the history of U.S. pesticide regulations, pesticide tolerances under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), exemptions from tolerances with examples of various pesticides, tolerances for crop groups with examples of herbs in various crop groups, and the use of pesticides under 21 CFR 111.
Agilent Technologies, a provider of chemical and biological measurement tools, provided the free, one-day symposium to provide regulatory perspectives from industry leaders and to highlight advancements in chemical measurement of contaminants like pesticides in dietary supplements.
The proliferation of global sourcing of botanicals and food ingredients used to manufacture herbal supplements creates a greater need for better measurement tools, according to Agilent Technologies.
