Ikhlas Khan, PhD, was presented with the Distinguished Research & Creative Achievement Award at the University of Mississippi's 2016 commencement ceremony on May 14, in Oxford, MS.
Dr. Khan is a research professor of pharmacognosy at Ole Miss and is the associate director of the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), which is based at the university. Supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by means of funds appropriated by Congress, NCNPR has a mandate to foster the growth of research in developing authentication, identification tools and evaluate the safety of botanical supplements, which is the foundation for the development of quality products and for conducting clinical research.
In April, NCNPR dedicated and opened the Natural Products Training Center at Ole Miss in a partnership with Waters Corporation to promote scientific standards in the advancement of commercially viable natural products by offering training courses for technical professionals, scientists, regulatory, quality control and quality assurance personnel affiliated with dietary supplements and other manufacturers of natural products.
In 2016 and for the fourth year in a row, The United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), Salt Lake City, UT, was a title sponsor of the 16th annual International Conference on the Science of Botanicals, held in April in Oxford, MS, and has been a supporter of this event for many years. Additionally, NCNPR is a UNPA MOU Partner.
President of the United Natural Products Alliance, Loren Israelsen, commented, “We heartily congratulate Dr. Khan, who is a most deserving recipient of this prestigious award that recognizes his many contributions to the University of Mississippi, the National Center for Natural Products Research and the natural products industry at large. While his name is known to many in the industry, everyone owes him thanks for his tireless work to improve the quality of botanical products and to further the scientific research behind these products, as well as for his efforts to facilitate communication and collaboration between FDA and industry at the annual International Conference on the Science of Botanicals. We look forward to many years of continued collaborations with Dr. Khan and his staff at Ole Miss.”
