New Polls Show Majority Support GMO Labeling Initiative

October 29, 2013

Washington State to vote Nov. 5 on Initiative 522, which would mandate the labeling of GMO food products.

In a new development for GMO labeling supporters in Washington state and across the U.S., two new polls show that the majority of Washingtonians support Yes on 522 for GMO labeling in the state.

The latest poll shows that in a margin of 45-38, voters in Washington support GMO labeling and intend to vote Yes on 522. This comes on the heals of an investigation of the opposition’s illegal efforts to hide campaign contributions from the world’s largest food companies.

Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now! a national grassroots movement of more than 650,000 farmers and citizens dedicated to building a sustainable food system, was encouraged by the new polls, explaining:
“Despite the fact that the opposition is spending more than $17 million dollars to defeat GMO labeling in Washington, people in Washington are not fooled.”

“As the latest polls show, the majority of voters in Washington State strongly support labeling genetically modified foods,” he continued. “With a vote only a few days away, Food Democracy Now! will continue to push hard for a future where consumers in Washington know what is in the food they eat, and Washingtonians vote to pass Yes on 522.”

More than 150,000 members of Food Democracy Now! have taken action in favor of the passage of Yes on 522, a ballot measure mandating the labeling of GMO food products in the state.
